Frequently Asked Questions About Donations
NOPL has been overwhelmed by the generosity of people across the country who have donated an estimated 1 million books of all kinds, conditions, and subjects. (Can anyone use hundreds of Russian grammar books?) We are grateful for this assistance, and will put all these books to the most appropriate uses possible. However due to extreme storage and staff limitations, we ask you to avoid sending books directly to NOPL.

Instead please consider the alternatives suggested in the FAQ below.

If you are a publisher, please contact us in advance at wmascari@gno.lib.la.us before shipping any books.

If you have questions after reading the FAQ, e-mail us at books@gno.lib.la.us. We will strive to reply quickly.

What is the best way to help New Orleans Public Library?

Monetary donations are the best way to help the library rebuild (link here to donate online). If you would rather mail your donation, please make your check payable to NOPL Foundation and send it to New Orleans Public Library Foundation, 219 Loyola Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70112.

What are other good ways to support NOPL?

Our library is also selling "Rebuild NOPL" T-shirts (link here to buy a T-shirt online) and bookplates (to purchase bookplates, contact Kim Tran (ktran@gno.lib.la.us).

Does the library accept book donations?

Due to storage and staff limitations, we urge donors to follow these suggestions:

If you are a publisher, please contact us in advance at wmascari@gno.lib.la.us before shipping books.

If you are an individual donating your personal collection, or an organization that has held a book drive on our behalf, please send your book donations to Better World Books (/BWB). This company can process and sell many more books than can NOPL, and will give us a share of the proceeds.

BWB will accept all pre-paid book donations, but we encourage you to follow its guidelines at http://www.betterworldbooks.com/programs/RebuildNOPL.aspx.

Remember to mark your boxes "Rebuild NOPL"!

I have questions for Better World Books about my donation. Who do I call?

Please contact BWB at rebuildnopl@betterworldbooks.com

I have already collected a great many books for NOPL--or would like to organize a book drive for NOPL--but I don't want to cause a burden to the library system by sending a large shipment of books. What should I do?

Consider holding a booksale in your city to benefit our library and send us the proceeds. This saves you the expense of shipping costs, eliminates storage and staffing problems on our end, enables library staff to purchase those materials that are most needed, and helps to generate additional publicity about NOPL's needs.

Does the library pay for and help to coordinate shipping?

We regret that we are unable to pay for or help coordinate shipping.

How can I ship my book donations?

If you are an individual, you may use a media, discounted rate to ship books to Better World Books at the address above.

If you are a publisher, please contact gharris@gno.lib.la.us in advance to work out delivery details. Please be aware that NOPL does not have a loading dock or fork lift. Large shipments must be sent in lift gate trucks.

Can you provide me with a detailed list of books you need?

The library does not have a master list of categories or titles needed. However, we are in greatest need of new materials published or produced since 2005.

Can I provide you with a list of what I have for you to review to see if the library could use specific titles? I feel that the library could use my specialty titles. Can I email a list?

Yes, please email detailed list to our Acquisitions Division at wmascari@gno.lib.la.us. Please allow a few days for a response.

What does NOPL do with donated books?

The Acquisitions Division decides whether the books are to be added to the NOPL collection. Some books may be given to the Friends of New Orleans Public Library, who hold book sales to benefit the library. NOPL is also offering books to local elementary and secondary schools and to needy families affected by the storm.

I have questions not addressed in this FAQ. Where should I direct these questions?

You may email questions to us at books@gno.lib.la.us. We will make every attempt to get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank You for helping us REBUILD New Orleans Public Library!
