NOTABLE OFFICERS

Governor Issac Stevens- First Governor of Washington Territory. Graduated from West Point in 1839. Fought in the Mexican War. During the Civil War he offered his services to the military and held various commands during the war. He was promoted to general in September 1861 and in September 1862 he was killed at the Battle of Chantilly which was the last fight of the Second Bull Run Campaign.

General William Harney- Commander of the Department of Oregon. Enlisted at the age of 17 and was commissioned an officer. During the Mexican War he developed a bitter relationship with Gen. Winfield Scott and often ignored his orders. Harney played a major role in the execution of the San Patricio Battalion during the battle of Chapultepec. After the war he was transferred to the Midwest where he fought the Sioux Indians in Kansas and Nebraska. Assumed command of the Department of Oregon in June 1858. In October 1860 he was officially reprimanded for his actions in the Pig War. During the Civil War he became the first Union general to be captured by Confederate forces but was released shortly. He then held various minor commands,  retired in 1863 and died in 1889.

Colonel Silas Casey- Senior commander of US forces in the Puget Sound region. During the Civil War he fought at the Battle of Seven Pines; here Casey's Redoubt is named after. He then commanded a provisional brigade in Washington, DC defenses and served as president of a board to examine candidates for officers of Negro troops. He also wrote the book Infantry Tactics which was adapted by the government in 1862. He retired in 1864 and died in 1882.

Captain Lewis Hunt- Commander, Company C, 4th Infantry Regiment. Company Married a daughter of Col. Casey and fought at Seven Pines, during the Civil War, where he was wounded. After recovery he commanded the draft rendezvous at New Haven, CT, pulled special duty in Kansas and Missouri and ended the war as Commander of New York Harbor defenses. After the war he served at a number of military posts until his death in 1886.

Captain George Pickett- Commander, Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment. Stayed on the San Juan Islands until the start of the Civil War. He then resigned from the army and joined the Confederate forces. During the Civil War he commanded the charge that bears his name at the Battle of Gettysburg. Later he commanded the Department of Virginia and North Carolina but was relieved of this command in 1865. After the war he became an insurance agent in Norfolk, VA and died in 1875.
