Jobs
Technical Director
GothamGazette.com, an online publication about New York City that is internationally recognized for its innovation, seeks a creative technical director to bring us to the next level.
We’re looking for someone hardworking and politically conscious with a sense of humor who would develop features and maintain our site with the help of a team of interns that he or she recruits and supervises.
Gotham Gazette, which is published by a non-profit, good-government group, has received local accolades and a slew of awards, including the Online Journalism Award for General Excellence. Among our innovations: we were one of the first to launch a site for citizen journalists, called the Community Gazettes We are also at the forefront of the serious games movement and have so far developed eight online games about issues facing New York City, everything from The New York City Budget Game to Plan Your Future Park
The person we seek must be hands-on, and have a vision as well -- a Webmaster plus.
Skills needed: PHP, Perl, MySQL, Apache, Unix administration, HTML, CSS, and mailing list management (Mailman). We are especially interested in someone with experience in managing a database-driven Web site, who can work with other programmers' code, understands best practices such as Web standards and structured programming, and has an interest in developing for journalism and social software.
Other skills that would be nice: Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, Web analytics, Quark
Opportunities exist for editing, writing and art directing as well, but these are opportunities, not requirements of the job. In addition, the technical director of Gotham Gazette must have an understanding of the rhythms, and an appreciation of the values, of journalism and must be an efficient, deadline-oriented task manager.
We encourage people from diverse backgrounds to apply.
Send your resume and cover letter to Oates Ritthichai at oates@gothamgazette.com and Jonathan Mandell at jmandell@gothamgazette.com
Salary in the mid-40s, but negotiable based on experience.
Topic Page Contributors
We have openings to be in charge of the following topic pages: Environment, Housing, Tech. The job mostly involves the writing of a monthly article (or an article every other month in some cases). For details, contact Jonathan Mandell at JMandell@gothamgazette.com
Internships
Gotham Gazette Internships
Gotham Gazette offers interns a practical work environment to learn about journalism, politics, and non-profit organizations on a nationally recognized Web site. A minimum of 5 hours per week is required. We can take full-time interns in the summer. We are willing to work with teachers, professors and interested students to provide a for-credit internship experience. Unfortunately, we are generally unable to pay our interns. However, small stipends are available under certain circumstances and for published work. Inquire for details.
Qualifications: Writing, editing, research, interviewing and phone skills relevant. Basic computer proficiency important. Advanced facility with computers noteworthy. Foreign language fluency desired. Interest in New York City politics, policy and civic life necessary.
We are looking for interns to work in the following areas:
City Government - attend hearings and meetings of the New York City Council, research issues and legislation, and help write articles.
The Citizen - select and translate articles from New York City's foreign-language newspapers, and write original articles about immigrants and immigrant communities. Complete fluency in both English and at least one other language needed.
Community Gazettes - assist the editors in putting together an interactive newspaper that serves every neighborhood in the city.
Web Development - help build content-management tools. Candidates should have prior experience. This is not a data entry position: it provides the opportunity to develop serious, server-side applications for an award-winning website.
Photography - help us make the site more visually appealing. Illustrators are welcome as well.
