Kentucky Highlands Timeline - 1960 to 1969


1960        
The Kentucky Turnpike Authority is established and the state begins to build a system of parkways.
       
       
1960        
Kentucky’s population reaches 3 million.
       
       
1960        
Loretta Lynn, the "Coal Miner's Daughter" from Butcher Hollow, makes her first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry.
       
       
1960        
Francis Gary Powers, a Letcher County native, is imprisoned in the Soviet Union after his U-2 spy plane is shot down. He is later freed in exchange for a captured Soviet spy.
       
       
1962        
The first Kentuckian dies in the Vietnam War. An estimated 125,000 Kentuckians serve in the conflict and 1,066 are listed as dead or missing in action by 1975.
       
       
1963        
Harry Caudill writes the novel, Night comes to the Cumberlands, attracting national attention to Appalachian problems.
       
       
1963        
Governor Bert Combs issues an executive order ending racial discrimination in all professions and establishments licensed by the Commonwealth
       
       
1963        
Christian County native Edward T. Breathitt Jr. is elected governor in November.
       
       
1963        
Over 100 million tons of coal produced in Kentucky.
       
       
1964        
President Lyndon B. Johnson tours eastern Kentucky to bring attention to his "War on Poverty" program.
       
       
1965        
Marine Corps Lance Corporal Joe C. Paul born in Whitley county Kentucky was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions near Chu Lai Vietnam in August 1965.

The Appalachian Regional Commission is created by Congress.

Ollie Combs of Knott County lies down in front of a bulldozer to prevent strip mining near her home. Her arrest caused statewide and national attention to coal mining in Kentucky.

The legislature adopts the most stringent strip mining reclamation law in the nation.

The Harlan Boys Choir is organized by David L. Davies and becomes an internationally known touring choir.
       
       
1967        
Louie B. Nunn of Barren County is elected governor, the first Republican in twenty-four years.
       
       
1969        
Appalshop Inc. is founded to promote an understanding of Appalachian culture and issues.
