  When bad things
befall good shows

Rerun spree is whacking #s for new episodes

By Mike Jasik

   Here we go again.
Another week of repeats has brought a beating to network ratings and depressing numbers for the few new entries available.
Weeks of repeat-heavy network schedules have frustrated viewers and they have subsequently turned away, assuming that everything’s in repeats.
As a results, new episodes of a number of hit shows have seen serious declines in viewers.
NBC’s “Just Shoot Me” and “Will & Grace” suffered without a new “Friends” to kick off the night, sliding 21 and 13 percent, respectively, from the first week of March, when the episodes were new and viewers were still fresh from February sweeps.
Fox’s “The Simpsons” and “Malcolm in the Middle” slipped 15 and 21 percent, respectively, from that same week.
Loads of reruns haven't helped Fox’s “Bernie Mac,” as the freshman comedy lost 22 percent of its adult 18-49 audience from the same week in March.
ABC’s “NYPD Blue” fell 13 percent, while NBC’s “Crossing Jordan” and lead-in “Third Watch” tumbled 10 and 19 percent, respectively.
Though it relies on no lead-in, CBS’s “Survivor: Marquesas” fell 15 percent from the first week in March, very likely losing viewers that would have shown up early for their “CSI.”
Though in repeats, “CSI” still pulled in over 22 million viewers as the week’s most-watched program and finished fifth in adult 18-49 ratings.
All the networks finished well below their season average for the week.
NBC collected the win in adults 18-49 with a measly 4.0 rating. CBS and Fox tied for second with a 3.2, ABC had a 2.7, WB a 1.6 and UPN a 1.4.
Two of midseason’s most adept bubble-balancers, NBC’s “Watching Ellie” and “Andy Richter Controls the Universe,” slipped out of the comfort zone last week.
Each posted a barely acceptable 3.3 adult 18-49 rating, which is easier for Fox to swallow due to the lower cost of filming “Richter.”
Near the end of its run, ABC’s “The Bachelor” inched up again to a 4.6 in adults 18-49, becoming the network’s highest-rated show of the week.
And it’s not just the young ones that have been taken in by the hopeful-romance-but-probably-just-some-nookie reality series. “The Bachelor” also ranked 20th in households and drew over 11 million total viewers.
CBS escaped with a slim win over NBC in household ratings, partly due to another strong performance from an original movie.
Like last week’s “The Pilot’s Wife, “Two Against Time” ranked high in households, in 14th place with nearly 12 million total viewers, but attracted little attention among the adult 18-49 set, where it garnered a weak 2.9 rating.
CBS for the week got by with a 7.2/12 household rating and share. NBC posted a 7.1/12, ABC a 5.1/9, Fox a 4.4/7, WB a 2.4/4 and UPN a 2.2/4.
