Voters' Roll: 20m and counting

South Africa's Voters' Roll now stands at over 20-million, with more people expected to be added as voter registration continues at electoral offices countrywide ahead of SA's 2005/06 municipal elections - the country's third local government elections since 1994.

Mzansi: SA banking spreads its net
South Africa's low-cost national bank account extends banking to low-income earners and those living beyond the reach of banking services. "Mzansi" has proved to be a hit, with over 1.5-million accounts opened in less than a year - the great majority by South Africans who had never banked before.

Social grants reach 10 million
The number of South Africans receiving social grants has risen to 10 million - 6.2 million of them children - after efforts to extend social security to poorer areas, and despite the removal of a significant number of fraudsters from the social grant net.



Maropeng unearths ancient tools
South Africa's Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site has thrown new light on humanity's ancient history, with one-million-year-old stone age tools recently unearthed during construction of the site's visitor centre, now known as Maropeng.
