AL-FAHOUM, TAWFIQ ( - 1935 )

From Nazareth- A prominent Nationalist, and a member of the Othoman Parliament, representing Nazareth. He was mayor of the city for two terms during Othoman Rule and for one term during the British Mandate. He died in 1935.

 

 

AL-FARES, ABDEL RAOUF MOHAMMED (1917- )

Born in 1917 in Nablus. Studied at the Nablus Secondary School. He was a legislative member of the Jordanian Parliament representing Nablus district, holding the position for six terms and was also a member at the Higher Arab Committee.

 

 

FARRAJ, YA'QOUB (1875-)

Christian; born in 1875 in Jerusalem; after World War I became a radical pan-Arab, whilst also being pro-British and anti-Zionist; Greek Orthodox representative to the Administrative Committee of the MCA in 1918; Jerusalem delegate to the 1st Palestinian-Arab Congress, held in Jerusalem, 1919, prefered Palestinian independence; elected to the 7th Palestinian National Congress (June 1928) as Christian representative and vice-president; vice-president of the Arab Executive Committee in 1934; elected representative to the Arab Higher Committee for the Jerusalem Christians in 1936; member of the delegation to the London Conference (February 1939). He is a cousin of Khalil al-Sakakini. He was a close friend of Raghib Nashashibi and a member of the opposition party El-Diffa'.

 

 

FARRAJ, MITRI (1886 - 1954)

Brother of Ya'coub Farraj- served with the Government of Palestine from the early days of the Mandate until 1948. He died in 1954 at the age of 68.

 

 

AL-FARUQI, 'ABD AR-RAHMAN AL-TAJI (1882-1958)
From Ramlah. He stuned politics and worked the vast tracts of land he owned. Prior to 1948 he moved to Egypt where he settled . He died in 1958.  

 

AL-FARUQI, SHEIKH SULAIMAN AL-TAJI (1882-1958)

Born in Ramlah and educated in al-Azhar University- Egypt and in al-Asitana. President of the Patriotic Ottoman Party (al-Hizb al-Watani al-Uthmani) which was set up in 1910 in Jaffa; leader of the MCA in Ramleh; promoter of the Third Palestinian Congress in Haifa, 1920; member of the Mu'arada faction; member of the Palestine Arab National Party (founded in November 1923) and its first elected president; elected representative to the 3rd (December 1920 in Haifa), 5th (August 1922, Nablus), 6th (June 1923, Jaffa) and 7th (June 1928) Congress of the Arab Executive Committee for Ramleh; supporter of the National Defence Party in the mid-1930s; founder and editor of Al-Jami'ah Al-Islamiyya newspaper in the mid-1930s in Jaffa. A life-long critic of the British, they revoked his license to practice law. As a blind man, he was inspired by Abu al-'Ala' al-Ma'arri, the famous Arab poet.

 

 

FREIJ, ELIAS (1920-1998)
 

Born in Bethlehem; businessman, factory owner (mother of pearl and olive wood handicrafts); head of Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce since 1970; elected mayor of Bethlehem since 1972; head of board of trustees of Bethlehem University since 1973; member of Palestinian delegation to the Middle East peace talks in Washington; Minister of Tourism and Antiquities in the PA. Died in Amman in march 1998.
