WASHINGTON (December 7, 2004) GenderPAC called on the Bush Administration and Congress to stop using taxpayers’ money to teach out-moded and harmful gender stereotypes in abstinence-only education programs. Last week, Congressman Henry Waxman released a report that showed many federally-funded abstinence-only curricula teach adolescents false and misleading information about reproductive health.

My name is Blaise Garber. I am a senior in the Department of Sociology, Barnard College, Columbia University. I am currently conducting research regarding the experiences of transgendered, transsexual and transgressively gendered people in the prison system. The purpose of this research is to gather a range of opinions and information about the ability of the current penal system to integrate non-traditionally gendered individuals. If you identify as transgendered, transsexual, transgressivley gendered, or gender variant (however you chose to define the label) and you have had experience with our prison system, I would like to hear what you thought of it.

Borderline Personality Disorder - Raising questions, finding answers |

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior. This instability often disrupts family and work life, long-term planning, and the individual's sense of self-identity. Originally thought to be at the "borderline" of psychosis, people with BPD suffer from a disorder of emotion regulation. While less well known than schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), BPD is more common, affecting 2 percent of adults, mostly young women.1 There is a high rate of self-injury without suicide intent, as well as a significant rate of suicide attempts and completed suicide in severe cases.2,3 Patients often need extensive mental health services, and account for 20 percent of psychiatric hospitalizations.4 Yet, with help, many improve over time and are eventually able to lead productive lives.Read More...

SURVEY: Have you ever felt that you aren't trans-enough? |

Hello all,
I am working on a conference paper about those of us in the trans community who have at one time or another felt that we are "not trans-enough" or that other people are "more trans" than we are. I am hoping to gain more of an insight into how and why individuals end up feeling this way, and how we as a community can be more supportive of each other to eliminate this phenomenon.
If you have ever experienced this type of insecurity, it would be greatly appreciated if you could take 2-5 minutes to fill out this quick relatively informal survey. All responses are anonymous, and the results will be used only for the purposes of this conference paper, and a related article in Transgender Tapestry. Survey results will be published on www.trans-academics.org as soon as the results are completed. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Take the survey here
Peace,
eli

SEATTLE: Homecoming, the quintessentially American autumn tradition featuring kings and queens wearing satin sashes and sparkly tiaras, is a tumultuous topic on campus these days.
Universities and high schools across the United States, driven in part by protests from gay students, are re-examining the ritual of crowning homecoming kings and queens, titles that often reward student achievement, are sometimes merely popularity contests and occasionally come with hefty scholarships.
