History

Members of the nationalist Africanist movement within the African National Congress (ANC), who eventually broke away from the ANC and formed the Pan Africanist Congress in 1959, began publishing The Africanist in 1954 as a voice for their position within the struggle for the liberation of Africans in South Africa. The Africanist continued to be published after the founding and subsequent banning of the PAC from South Africa in 1960. It was succeeded in 1966 by the Azania News as the official organ of the Pan Africanist Congress. From 1966 to 1968, Azania News was published in Lusaka, Zambia, and from 1969 to 1993 in the external headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Publication of The Africanist was resumed in London in 1983.

The Azanian People's Liberation Army (APLA), the military wing of the PAC published Azania Combat and its supplemental publication, Azania Commando.

In addition to the major publications of the organization, the various branches, offices and missions of the Pan Africanist Congress printed a considerable amount of serial publications, newsletters, pamphlets, handbills, posters, reports and other material. The offices also collected a great amount of material printed by other organizations, particularly periodicals and printed reports concerning South African politics, international affairs, and radical ideology.

In 1998, archivists at the University of Fort Hare separated the publications and printed material received with the records from the PAC offices in Johannesburg, Tanzania, United Nations and Zimbabwe, and combined them into a separate Publications group.
