After the establishment of the Recording Academy in Los Angeles, New Yorker John W. Griffin, then-executive director of the RIAA, came to California to get advice on forming a New York Chapter. His challenge was to convince New Yorkers that the newly-formed Academy was more than a California organization. Because New York was a major center of the recording industry, it wasn't long before Griffin gathered many of the city's recording community leaders together to launch the New York Chapter in 1958.

The New York Chapter has been at the forefront in developing events and initiatives to serve its music community. In 1995, the chapter presented its first Heroes Awards. Each year, important and accomplished members of the recording industry have been honored by the chapter at this gala event. Funds raised have been used to grant scholarships and make charitable donations as well as to support the chapter's educational efforts. The New York Heroes Awards has become the model for similar events presented by the Chicago, D.C., Florida, Philadelphia and Texas Chapters, and the Pacific Northwest Branch.
The New York Chapter regularly presents seminars and other events that receive national media attention, such as a workshop on the 5.1 audio format with multiple GRAMMY winner Elliot Scheiner and a seminar/performance called "Nothin' But...Guitars" with Carlos Alomar and GRAMMY winners Sharon Isbin and Steve Vai. Taking advantage of the power of the Web, a new series of "e-mail specials" will focus on a diverse group of people and topics that the chapter will be able to present on a "moment's notice" through e-mail-only invitations.
The New York Chapter has been very active in the post-Sept. 11 recovery efforts. The chapter office housed and supported the Academy's music therapy initiative and the chapter instituted its own efforts including a substantial donation to the uniformed services relief funds, working with New York-based labels to establish high school mentoring programs and creating an in-school songwriting program at Stuyvesant High School (next to Ground Zero).

The New York Chapter seeks to maintain strong connections with its diverse music and ethnic committees. These efforts include various advisory committees and outreach events. With the relatively small geographic size of the region covered by the New York Chapter, the "city" is the convenient focus of the chapter's activities. Boston is quickly becoming a major new area for our efforts. Several important events have already been held in Boston and more will follow.
The New York Chapter also plays an active role in the preservation and technology initiatives of the GRAMMY Foundation which promotes the preservation of America's recorded sound heritage.
Recently, the New York Chapter created a groundbreaking education model by providing a major grant to support the GRAMMY Foundation's Leonard Bernstein Center "Artful Learning" curriculum. The grant will allow the center to expand its programming in the New York City public schools. As part of this effort, the chapter created an alliance between the Center and the Midori & Friends foundation that will result in both programs working together to provide arts-based general curriculum and music education to New York City public schools.
The New York Chapter also hosts MusiCares staff. A regional case manager is on site and 24-hour assistance is available by calling 1.877.303.6962.
Each month, chapter members and the music community at large can take advantage of the many educational, networking and other music-related opportunities and services that are presented by or in association with the New York Chapter, as well as member discounts.
