  Tonys: not
hardly a disaster

Viewers 18-49 up a tad, tho'  total viewing sank

By Toni Fitzgerald

You might think that a longer telecast for the Tony Awards, which are even less hip than the fading Oscars or Emmys, would mean a smaller audience of adults 18-49.
Perhaps it was the gay male kiss or perhaps it was the addition of hottie host Hugh Jackman (of “X-Men,” not “Man of La Mancha”).
For whichever reason, the Tonys actually performed slightly better this year among 18-49s even though household ratings and viewership levels slid to record lows.
CBS decided to expand its coverage of the awards show to three hours from the traditional two this year.
In the past, an hour of technical and minor awards were presented on PBS before the major categories were recognized from 9 to 11 on CBS.
This year CBS consolidated the entire affair on one network.
That seemed like a counter-intuitive decision, considering that the audience had been slipping for the show anyway, despite the large-looming presence of the very contemporary hit “The Producers” two years ago.
This year’s awards averaged a 1.9 rating and 5 share among 18-49s while facing Game 3 of the NBA Finals on ABC and the ever-popular “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” in reruns on NBC.
Is a 1.9 rating really something to brag about? Only when it represents a 19 percent increase from the previous year’s 1.6/4.
Among 25-54s the awards were up even more, increasing by 30 percent versus last year to a 2.6/6. Last year the show averaged a 2.0/5.
A more modern awards ceremony may have helped boost viewership. The gay-themed play “Take Me Out” won several awards. A man playing a woman secured best actor in a musical.
And British newspapers have been abuzz because the winners of best score for “Hairspray” shared a full kiss during the Sunday broadcast, though the story hasn’t been so prevalent in the American press.
CBS received 78 complaints about the liplock, a fairly small proportion of those watching.
Among total viewers the show performed pretty poorly. Last year’s record-low 7.98 million dipped to 7.95 million this year.
Also Sunday night, Barbara Walters’ interview with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had to air at 7 p.m. in parts of the country in deference to the NBA finals on ABC.
Babs only managed a 3.7 rating, tying for No. 24 in that early slot. Still, it was quite popular among viewers, attracting ABC’s biggest summer audience (13.5 million) since September 1995.
NBC’s “For Love or Money” debuted to strong numbers in its Monday slot, and may keep those numbers into next week thanks to Monday’s revelation that the bachelor had been a disciplinary problem in the military.
Fox's “American Idol” spinoff “American Juniors” registered the biggest debut with a 4.8 Tuesday, the highest-ranked original program of the week.
