THREE JAMAICANS have now been officially confirmed dead and 17 are missing in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York last week.
The dead have been identified as Neil Hinds and Keith Broomfield. Hinds was a former athlete who was attending a seminar in a building near the Trade Center when one of the towers collapsed and debris crushed him before he could escape. He died in hospital. Broomfield worked on the 110th floor of Tower 1. The name of the third person has not yet been released.
Among the missing are Carol South-Rabalais, who worked on the 90th floor, Tower 2; Michael Parkes, an accountant who worked in the Tower, Michael Richards, 38, an artist who had a studio on the 92nd floor of 1 World Trade Center. A Jamaican firm May Davis Group with offices on the 87th floor of 1 WTC reported one person missing. He was identified as Harry Ramos.
Others reported as missing are Orlando Kesley, David Taylor, Sonnet Edwards, Denise Gregory, Steve Bunning, Kareem Gordon, Owen Bernard and Courtney Walcott. The Gleaner was unable to ascertain the names of the others reported as missing.
Richards worked through the night prior to the attack putting the finishing touches on several sculptures for an upcoming exhibition.
The funeral service for Neil Hinds will take place this Saturday morning at the Prince of Peace Lutheran church in Cambria Heights, Queens. No information was readily available for Broomfield.
Jamaica's Consul-General, Dr. Basil Bryan, has created a register at the Consulate, which invites Jamaicans to name those missing and dead.
In the meantime, overall, 486 have been confirmed dead with more than 5,000 missing. Of that, media reports say that 114 people were having breakfast meetings. Nationals from over 60 countries have so far been reported dead or missing.
