Patterson had been instrumental in attacking the crime syndicate controlling Phenix City, during his term as attorney general. He was assassinated in Phenix City in 1954. John Patterson ran on a platform of maintaining Alabama's system of racially segregated schools; his opponent in the Democratic primary was George C. Wallace, who went on to replace Patterson in the 1962 primary.
