The Paris of Sindh

Letter January 11, 2020
Woefully, no one cares about these old edifices now.

SHIKARPUR: Shikarpur represents history and culture, as it is brimming with historical and prominent places, therefore, it was also called the Paris of Sindh in the old days.

Shikarpur was famous for its historical places and its finest amenities such as well known hospitals, schools and efficiently made drainage systems.

Woefully, no one cares about these old edifices now. Instead of caring, local residents of Shikarpur have almost demolished these buildings and in replacement new large buildings are made. Only a few buildings remain which are also taken over by builder mafias.

It is depressing to see Sir Henry Holland Mission Eye Hospital, which once was a well-known and historical hospital of Shikarpur, deteriorating. A local builder mafia has acquired the hospital and there plans to build a residential area on the hospital land. From Sardars and the Khan of Kalat to the ordinary villagers, everyone was treated there.

No one is ready to own the city and work towards collective progress and development as everyone is busy trying to fill their own pockets. The mentalities of the people need to change because we all have a moral responsibility to our surroundings.

The authorities concerned are requested to save the historical places of Shikarpur, otherwise, the history of this city would be trampled and demolished, and it will no more deserve to be called a place with a strong historical heritage. Furthermore, people too need to collectively work towards a better future.
