NEW DELHI: The T20 World Cup is at its peak excitement as we move toward the semi-final stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 tournament.
In Group 1 of the Super 8 stage, the battle of cricketing giants India and Australia is set to take place on June 24 in St. Lucia. The group is at a very interesting juncture after Afghanistan secured a victory over Australia.

India are undefeated so far in the tournament, but can one loss in their last Super 8 encounter against Australia leave their chances to make the semi-finals dependent on other teams?

Group 1 situation
  • India have played two matches and won both. They have four points and a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +2.425.
  • Australia have also played 2 matches with mixed results, winning one and losing one. They have two points and an NRR of +0.223.
  • Afghanistan, like Australia, have won one and lost one. They too have two points from two games, but have a negative NRR of -0.650.
  • Bangladesh have lost both their matches so far in Super 8, and have an NRR of -2.489.
If India win their last match of the Super 8 against Australia, they will secure a spot in the semi-finals as group topper. They will face England, who finished second in Group 2, in the semis.
After losing to India, Australia will be knocked out of the tournament if Afghanistan win against Bangladesh.
South Africa and England have booked their spots in the semi-finals from Group 2 of the Super Eight stage. The two teams out of the race for the knock-out stage are co-hosts West Indies and USA.

Who will India face in the semi-final of T20 World Cup 2024?
  • If India win against Australia, they will face England in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024.
  • If India lose their final Super 8 match, they will have to wait for the last Group 1 match between Afghanistan and Bangladesh to know their position in the final standings. If they finish second, they will play South Africa in the semi-final.

T20 World Cup Semi-final qualification scenarios:
Can India be knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Super 8 stage?
Australia's victory over India, coupled with Afghanistan's triumph over Bangladesh, could potentially lead to India's elimination from the T20 World Cup 2024.
But India can only miss out of the semis spot, if Australia and Afghanistan win their final matches by more than 120 runs. A very unlikely prospect.
An Australia victory over India will make life tough for Afghanistan too as they will need a very big margin of victory over Bangladesh to better the NRR of India and Australia.
Afghanistan will have a clear idea when they face Bangladesh tomorrow morning, what they need to do to make the semis. As India vs Australia will be over by then.
Even Bangladesh are also not out of the race, but the prospects are very unlikely. They not only need to win very big against Afghanistan, but hope for a proper thrashing of Australia by India.
