AUS vs ENG Highlights, T20 World Cup 2024: All-round Australia thrash defending champions England by 36 runs for second win

Defending champion England charged at Australia’s tournament-best 201 total and came up 36 runs short in a one-sided T20 World Cup contest on Saturday.

The first big heavyweight match — a day before India vs Pakistan — failed to live up to the billing as Australia impressively squeezed England, which hit only three boundaries in the last six overs at Kensington Oval.

Forced to bat first, Australia made a brutal start by openers David Warner and Travis Head — 70-0 after 4.5 overs — but was pulled back and posted 201-7, the highest total in a week-old tournament which has featured tricky pitches.

Tasked with making the third biggest successful run chase in tournament history, England took a swipe but decayed to 165-6. Adam Zampa and Pat Cummins took two cheap wickets each.

Australia moved on top of Group B with two wins from two matches, while England remained second to last, winless but with Oman and Namibia to come.

Very pleased with that effort, our all-round game is outstanding, it was a great game. The way we started, we learned a lot of lessons from the first game and the boys turned up really well today. The bowlers did their thing so well, we are an experienced team. Patty was outstanding. it was a tough end to bowl, wind was coming in. Keep learning from these conditions, keep improving and keep progressing through the tournament.

Australia's winning captain Mitch Marsh

They came with a lot of intent, put us under pressure. They also bowled really well, bowled in good channels and also defended really well. The conditions were quite extreme with a shorter boundary on one side. Great bowler to call on as a captain, great variety and skill, lucky to have him back. Outside the powerplay, it was always going to be a challenge. Zampa bowled really well in the middle overs, their pacers also made use of the longer boundary well.

England's losing skipper Jos Buttler

I did my best, but it popped out (on the dropped catch). We have played them many times, we know how they play. We knew there was a longer side and we wanted them to access that area. It's difficult to understand the wickets here in the West Indies, I bowled a few balls and realised that it stayed low, so I needed to bowl on a spot, you never know what'll happen. I wanted them to come at me and look to attack. We have great depth in our bowling attack, some bowlers bowl to the longer boundary and we used a lot of variations.

20th over | Ball 6 | Marcus Stoinis to Harry Brook | 4 RUNS | AUSTRALIA WIN BY 36 RUNS!

That's it! Australia have done it. Two in two for Mitch Marsh and Co. as they beat holders England by 36 runs in Barbados. Chasing a stiff 202 for victory, England finish at 165 for 6 in 20 overs. After an all-round show from the batters, Aussie bowlers fired in unison to strangle the English in chase. After Jos Buttler and Phil Salt's explosive start, Australia kept taking regular wickets and kept England in check throughout the chase, registering a comfortable win. Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa picked up a couple of wickets each while Josh Hazlewood and Marcus Stoinis grabbed a wicket each as well. So Australia make it two in a row in Group B while England have a wash out and a defeat to their name so far at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

I think it’s a competitive total, we took it on in the first six overs and put pressure on them. We knew it was going to be spin in the first six, for us it was about to get as much as we can in the first six. We know at the other end it was going to get challenging, but look they got two out and out quicks, excellent skills, so had to put them under pressure. When Jofra bowled an off-cutter it jumped but it was when the ball was new, later on a few kept low, we have got a good total.
