From 28 December 2018 to 30 December 2018, the government of West Bengal is organizing the 'Rosogolla Festival'.
All you need to know about the 'Rosogolla Festival’
‘Rosogolla’ is a very important part of Bengali cuisine. It is something without which no happy event can be imagined in West Bengal! From Durga Puja to wedding functions, no other sweet can ever replace these spongy white balls of sweetness from the menu. This sweet dish is said to have originated in East India, which is now divided into two states: West Bengal and Odisha.
However, it is said that ‘Nobin Chandra Das’, who started a sweet shop in Jorashanko in 1864, has invented ‘rosogolla’. Anyways, let’s get back to the topic!

It was still a topic of debate between the two states of India: Odisha and West Bengal, in which both the states claimed that the famous ‘rosogolla’ is originated on their land and for that, in 2016, the government of West Bengal applied for a Geographical Indications (GI) tag for a variant of rosogolla called 'Banglar rosogolla’ and clarified that the Bengali sweet is different from the Odisha’s variant as they both are different in colour, texture, preparation method and taste. On 14 November 2017, the GI Registry of India granted West Bengal the GI tag for ‘Banglar Rasogolla’. To celebrate the GI tag, last year, people in West Bengal did a lot of things from hosting a ‘rosogolla utsob’ to preparing the world’s largest rosogolla which was weighed 9kgs!

This year, to pay tribute to the inventor of rosogolla, ‘Nobin Chandra Das’, and to celebrate 150 years of ‘rosogolla’, the government of West Bengal is organizing a 3-day grand ‘rosogolla festival’ from 28 December 2018 to 30 December 2018.
So, go out in the city of Kolkata and satiate your sweet tooth before the year 2018 ends!
