NEW DELHI: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Thursday said like the Supreme Court (SC) it also does not consider same sex marriage and relationships a crime. However, it does not support such relationships.
The comments from the RSS came on a day the SC decriminalised Section 377, which criminalises consensual unnatural sex, saying it violated the rights to equality.
"Like the Supreme Court we too do not consider this a crime.
However, same sex marriage and relationships are neither natural nor desirable which is why we do not support such relationships," said Arun Kumar, Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh, RSS on the SC verdict on decriminalising Section 377.
Kumar added that traditionally, the Indian society too does not recognise such relations. "A man usually learns by experiences which is why this subject has to be dealt at social and psychological levels," he said.
Earlier in the day, CJI Dipak Misra and Justice AM Khanwilkar pronounced the first judgment saying consensual sexual relation between same gender adults in private does not fall foul of Section 377 IPC.
Gay sex had been punishable by up to 10 years in jail.
Section 377 prohibited "carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal" - which was widely interpreted to refer to homosexual sex.
