Well-known casting director Mukesh Chhabra has spilled the beans about Rao's struggling phase. He told Pinkvilla that Rao, after graduating, worked on a low-budget project that took nearly four years to complete.
Chhabra did not disclose the name of the film and recalled that Rajkummar Rao owned a bike during his struggling days and that he had witnessed Rao's journey closely. Chhabra mentioned that the actor, even when he wasn't a perfect fit for an audition, would insist on being given a chance to test his skills.Reflecting on those times, Chhabra noted that Rao was deeply passionate about his performance. He added that through testing Rao's talent, he came to understand just how hard the 'Citylights' actor worked.
Mukesh Chhabra also spoke about how, unlike other aspiring actors, Rajkummar Rao was always ready for audition offers. He went on to say that Rao's approach was always to be prepared for any opportunity, emphasizing that if one is an actor, they should be ready for auditions at all times. The casting director also reminisced about how Rao would receive a call from him at 9 pm about an audition scheduled for the next day, and Rao would always show up. Mukesh also revealed that he was the one who cast Rao in his first ad film.
Currently, Rajkummar is gearing up for his much-anticipated horror comedy 'Stree 2'. It also stars Shraddha Kapoor, Aparshakti Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi, and Abhishek Banerjee. Apart from this, Rajkummar also has 'Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video' with Triptii Dimri in the pipeline.
