Integrated terminal of Trichy airport becomes operational
TRICHY: The new integrated terminal of Trichy International Airport became operational on Tuesday morning. A domestic flight arriving from Chennai was given a water cannon salute near the new terminal building.
The first batch of passengers arriving and departing from the integrated terminal building were greeted by the staff of the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
An international aircraft from Singapore was expected to be the first to use the new terminal building.
However, due to a delay, passengers of a domestic flight from Chennai became the first to access the facilities in the new terminal. Passengers of a Bengaluru-bound domestic flight were the first to depart from the new terminal.
The AAI stated that measures have been initiated for the smooth transition of both international and domestic flight operations from the old terminal to the new terminal in the international airport.
Sprawling over an area of 75,000 square meters, the new terminal, developed at a cost of Rs 1,112 crores with two levels for arrivals and departures, has the capacity to handle 4.45 million passengers per year. Based on its environmental friendliness, the new terminal building of Trichy International Airport was awarded a Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) of 4 stars on a scale of five.
The parking area of the new terminal has facilities to charge electric vehicles. Construction for the new terminal began in February 2019. The new terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 2, 2024.
