Riding the Rails With Amtrak Joe

Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. returned to his beloved Amtrak train Tuesday, just like old times. He was traveling light, except for the big entourage.

On the Road - The Caucus - Politics - New York Times Blog

One of the staples of Mr. Biden’s Regular Joe credentials over the decades has been his regular ridership on the train between Washington and his home in Wilmington, Del. But the ritual was sharply curtailed last month when Barack Obama picked him to be his running mate and his home suddenly became the campaign trail.

Now, when he does take his beloved Amtrak, the tradition of Mr. Biden as the quiet, everyday Commuter Joe has given way to a big entourage, press throng and overall commotion that follow in the wake of a major party running mate.

This change of life was on full display Tuesday, when Mr. Biden took an afternoon Acela from D.C. to Wilmington before heading out for a three-day road trip to Pennsylvania and Ohio. The candidate carried a tattered leather briefcase (brown), was greeted by two uniformed Amtrak officers and wore a big, camera-ready grin for a cluster of reporters and cameramen.

“Hi, how are ya,” Mr. Biden said, greeting the press.

At 1:57 p.m., Mr. Biden took a seat on the first passenger car – not a quiet car – which included a large section that was closed off to other passengers by Secret Service agents. Mr. Biden spent the first part of his journey talking on a cell phone, and “in meetings,” according to Biden spokesman David Wade.

When the press was allowed onto Mr. Biden’s car, the candidate was already in full meeting-greeting mode. He gestured to a reporter to come forward. The reporter demurred initially, saying he did not want to be a nuisance.

“Hey, I’m the nuisance,” Mr. Biden reassured, gesturing to the phalanx of camera people and Secret Service agents around him.

“I used to ride this thing every day and nobody paid any attention.” said Mr. Biden, as he then worked his way up the aisle.

“Hey man,” he said to one guy. “Hey, I saw Matt the other day,” he said to another.

Across the aisle, a Newark-bound passenger, Chrissy Dumbert, took in the commotion and observed, “This is the craziest train ride I’ve ever been on.”

Meantime, Mr. Biden was assuring another passenger, “If we get elected, it will be the most train-friendly administration ever.”

He told another passenger, Jim Dunn: “I understand you’re a suspect,” to which the Metro Park, N.J.-bound Mr. Dunn said, “Yes, you’ve probably seen my picture on the wall of the post office.”

Mr. Dunn, who spoke with an Irish accent, said he probably knew Mr. Biden’s ancestors back in Ireland, and that he took Mr. Biden’s odd greeting in good faith.

“Get the hell out of my way,” Mr. Biden yelled to another reporter standing in the aisle. “I love you, but you’re bothering all these people.”

He turned to another passenger: “You’re on television now. I’m sorry, but I can’t control this.”

Mr. Biden then entered the dining car and whispered something to the woman behind the counter, Joanne. He ordered a bottle of water and a “Cranberry cocktail.”

A reporter expressed surprise that Biden would partake of a “cocktail” at this afternoon hour.

“I’m the only guy you know who doesn’t drink,” Biden said, adding that he has never taken a drink in his life.

“Too many alcoholics in my family,” he explained.

He then pivoted and turned back toward his seat, meeting and greeting more passengers. A few people made cell phone calls from their seats to report their Biden sightings.

Mr. Biden stopped and chatted with Neil and Ellen Meltzer, who were both heading to New York for a party at the Rainbow Room. Ms. Meltzer invited him to the party and, Mr. Biden invited Ms. Meltzer out of the road with him. He also offered Ms. Meltzer his bottled water.

All offers were declined amicably.

Mr. Biden then greeted an older man, Fritz Schwartz, who had testified before the Senate Judiciary committee on Tuesday.

Mr. Biden, for some reason, called Mr. Schwartz “the professor,” although Mr. Schwartz noted that he was not in fact a professor.

Mr. Biden said that he looked like a professor, because Mr. Schwartz had “an air of authority” about him. Mr. Schwartz later said that he heard Seantor Biden say “hair of authority.” (In fact, the guy had great hair, if not necessarily professorial hair,)

The train arrived in Wilmington at 3:16 p.m. Amtrak Joe walked the platform, shaking hands with cops and Amtrak workers.

At one point, he reached into an open door for one last hand-shake with another Amtrak employee and the automatic doors nearly closed on his arms. “You’re like family,” Biden said, pulling his arm away.

Calamity was averted at the last minute when the doors re-opened. A K-9 dog following behind barked at the near-incident.

The candidate left the Wilmington station by motorcade at 3:24.

Joe, study up hard in advance of the Rovian tactics surely to be unleashed on you in the debate.

All women should know that Joe Biden was the original author and champion of the Violence Against Women Act which has provided relief to millions of abused women.

They should also know that McCain repeatedly voted against funding to fight and prevent domestic violence, including a $9 million increase for the Office of Violence Against Women. Astonishingly, he even opposed authorizing grants to aid children who have witnessed domestic violence.

John McCain is bad for women and bad for America.

Mr. Biden acts like and average “joe”, can talk to the average “joe” and grew up as an average “joe”. I can relate to him like my father or my grandfather. He means what he says and is really looking out for the interests of the people he represents.

Spin it all you want, the man shows his blue collar roots and his Catholic faith. He shows the strong characteristics of a family man. The kind of down to earth person that can relate to those who grew up in a working class family; like myself. He is a man of honor.

OBAMA/BIDEN 2008

I guess it’s just a coincidence that Hunter Biden,Joe’s lobbyist son,is on the Amtrak Board of Directors. That sounds like an Ethics violoation to me.

“Biden even has a family connection to Amtrak. His younger son, Hunter, is a lobbyist and the vice chairman of Amtrak’s board of directors,”

You’re still a bit confused about this election. Joe Biden isn’t running against John McCain. Barack Obama is running against John McCain. You know Obama,,,the fledgling Senator with the onionskin resume.

Neither you nor your candidates can keep that straight, which is just another reason why you’re going to lose in November.

If you folks don’t know who you’re running against, how can you expect to run the country?

If there is a single politician in Washington DC that mirrors the every day working man. It’s Joe Biden.

Good point. Sarah Palin is even worse for women than McCain. As mayor of Wasilla, she actually billed rape victims for forensic tests. Her ‘blame-the-victim’ mentality is one reason Alaska has by far the highest rate of violent rape in the country.

The election is Obama-Biden vs. McCain-Palin. What Joe Biden has done is relevant – obviously. I’m sure if Sarah Palin had any positive accomplishments you’d be talking about it too.

Don’t count your chickens, Curliquedan. This race is a close one, and it would be wise that we all refrain from gloating about election outcomes before November. Someone is going to eat crow, and it won’t be pretty.

I have to admit, Joe Biden is a pretty lovable guy, and this article just underscores his amicable qualities. Sarah Palin is pretty and friendly, but she lacks Joe’s natural warmth and fluid ease with not only the public, but the press, too. He comes across as a man with no fear, no nervousness.

It may be an act, but it’s most convincing. Infectious, too!

Joe Biden’s facelift (around the temples) looks like he has been riding outside of the train.

Curliquedan… as usual, it is you that is confused. This is an article about Joe Biden, Barack Obama’s running mate, so I was commenting on the impressive accomplishments of Joe Biden on domestic violence.

Since you don’t like the fact that I pointed out John McCain’s shockingly abysmal record on domestic violence issues, as opposed to Sarah Palin’s, I am more than happy to oblige you with a couple especially egregious examples of Palin’s abysmally shady history on the issue as well…

While Mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin changed regulations and started charging rape victims for their own rape kits at a cost of $500 to $1,200. It was beyond despicable for Palin to add insult to injury for women who had already been through so much. It took a state law enacted in 2000 to ban the disgraceful practice that Palin instituted.

Equally shocking is Sarah Palin’s opposition to abortion, even in cases of rape and incest. As if the horror of rape wasn’t bad enough, Palin would force a 12 year old girl who was brutally raped by a junky, or even a relative, to sacrifice her entire childhood in order to raise her rapist’s child.

You can’t argue on the actual issues because you have no legitimate argument, and that is why you are going to lose in November.

Don’t forget the rule, Curly… people who voted for Bush lost the privilege of ever being taken even remotely seriously again, and that means you.

Once again, you’re a bit confused. Joe Biden isn’t running against John McCain. Barack Obama is running against John McCain.

Curliquedan,

g English makes a relevant point, but have it your way:

Sarah Palin’s latest of 4 different explanations for why she fired Alaska’s public safety commissioner is that he had gone over her head in seeking federal money for an initiative to combat sexual assault crimes, including those against children. In other words (if one accepts her newest explanation), she fired him for being too aggressive in going after child molesters.

(Now, if you ask nice, we’ll go back to criticizing McCain.)

Even Karl Rove says McCain has “gone too far” in his never-ending lies.

When the most evil man in America says that someone has gone too far, that’s pretty bad.

Haha, Curliquedan – don’t get bitter just because Palin can only offer up a history of earmarks and moose hunting..

Curliquedan,
Point taken. However I believe that we are voting for a ticket (i.e. Obama-Biden vs. McCain-Palin). In that case, I would much rather vote for Senator Biden who has a distinguished record of supporting women than Gov. Palin who advocates limiting the choices of women and overturning a decision by the Supreme Court that the majority of American’s support.

Curliquedan —

And maybe you and your conservative buddies should realize it’s not Palin at the top of the ticket either.

It’s the man who has consistently voted with Bush over the man’s horrendous presidency.

The one who thinks the indicators of the economy are strong.

I don’t really think you want to remind voters of that now, do you, because the only reason McCain is running well is his No.2.

That’ won’t last much longer, though.

Trust me.

Curliquedan –

Perhaps the concept of two people running on one ticket has eluded you, as many facts have in the past. I will provide a simply-worded explanation, so that perhaps you may understand.

John McCain and Sarah Palin are running on the Republican ticket.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden make up the Democratic Ticket.

If Palin is more popular than Biden, but Obama more popular than McCain, that does not mean that Palin will win the vice presidency and Obama the presidency.

Because the four people on the tickets cannot win independent of their partners on the ticket, essentially, Joe Biden and Barack Obama are running against Sarah Palin and John McCain. So yes, in fact, Joe Biden is running against John McCain, in respect to their tickets.

Given your fanatical support of McCain and his increasingly trashy campaign, though, facts seem to be something of an anathema for you and your candidate. One might suggest that that is “just anothe [sic] reason why you’re going to lose in November.” :)

The Republican portrait of Sarah Palin as an economic reformer could not be farther from the truth. The reality is that Sarah Palin is the queen of government pork.

Under Sarah Palin, Alaska has had by far the highest level of pork per capita in the nation! In fact, they had more than twice that of any other state!

Last year under Palin Alaska received $555.54 per person, Delaware received just $64.30 per person, and Illinois received only $25.47 per person.

The fact that the Republicans have chosen to champion the Governor of the state that is literally the worst abuser of pork in the entire nation as an economic reformer is almost as ridiculously funny as it is amazingly pathetic.

To “Culiquedan”:

First of all, you are–quite simply–a jerk. And an idiot (Well, SOMEBODY on here has to just come out and say it!)

Second, I would be careful if I were you when it comes to accusing people of being confused and/or not knowing who is running against who. The flip-flopping morons you seem to support don’t seem to know who is at the top of their ticket. It’s pathetic and would be funny if so much were not hanging in the balance.

“The Stewardess” is going to have her own head handed to her on a whalebone platter after Senator Biden is done with her in the vice-presidential debate–trust and believe. Charlie Gibson’s little chat with her was NOTHING compared to how foolish and out of her depth she will appear next to a candidate who really knows his stuff as Joe Biden does.

When the viability of a campaign is solely dependent upon the “star power” of a Neo-neocon, religious fanatic with the brains of a turnip, I would also not be so very sure of victory in Nov.

Thankfully, the sun is already quickly setting on “The Lipstick’s” brief daytime of notoriety and without her that tired old man (who can’t seem to keep his story straight, let alone his talk) is finished.

Michael J. Roeske

I guess it’s just a coincidence that Biden’s son Hunter, who is a lobbyist, is also on the Amtrak Board of Directors
(as reported in the Washington Post).

Touche, Curliquedan.

But he is running against Sarah Palin, who, in contrast to Biden’s work on VAWA, forced victims of rape to pay for their own rape kits. Call me a left-wing nut if you will, but that’s not the kind of family values I want in any office.

Biden strikes me as a honest, down to earth, sensible man who loves life. He is a perfect complement to Obama as they share the same vision of helping others less fortunate. His experience devours the Republican opponents in the arena of foreign policy.

Palin will approach the debates like a beauty pageant.. Biden’s expertise speaks for itself without the makeup.

Biden is a real person, and he’s got the brains to be second in command. Bravo for him championing the Violence Against Women Act. Go Joe!

I would feel so much at ease knowing Obama and Biden are the President and VP of this great nation.

The polls are, thankfully, coming back around to Obama.

America is waking up to the nightmare that a McCain/Palin presidency would usher in.

As for Biden, what can I say? Honest guy, down-to-earth…and unlike Palin HE KNOWS POLICY.

Oh wait…I can ‘t vote for him. He can’t see Russia from his house in Delaware.

;-)
