“In May of 1946, my parents Carroll and Mary Henkel, together with close
family friend John Harris, decided to begin producing furniture in the
basement of the family home. Thus, from modest beginnings, the Henkel
Harris legacy was born. The first finished Henkel Harris piece was a
hand-crafted reproduction corner cabinet. The three young entrepreneurs
were very excited about their accomplishment. Unfortunately, they faced one
small problem – how to get the large corner cabinet out of the house! In their
exuberance, they had failed to measure correctly, and the finished piece
would not fit through the basement door. Carroll's solution was to saw it in
half and glue it back together. They then placed the corner cabinet in the
back of an old pickup truck and drove to
Washington, D.C. where it was quickly sold. While they were happy with
their initial success, the three friends knew the basement was obviously not
a place to produce furniture. Shortly after their return from Washington, D.C.
the trio moved their tiny operation to a warehouse next door to the Henkel
home.” The rest as they say is history! William M Henkel, President & CEO

according to The Tennessean, a Gannett paper. Nissan, and other large Tennessee
corporations attempted to push for a veto in the last days to no avail.
Also Monday, the Tennessee Senate passed a bill barring the discussion of
homosexuality in elementary and middle schools, dubbed the “don’t say gay’
bill. According to CBS 21 News, the bill’s sponsor believes the media has unfairly
targeted the bill and misunderstood its intent.
“The media has hyped this up to banning a word and that’s absolutely not true,” he
told the TV station. “It just says what is appropriate for real young children to be taught.”
Gay rights advocates are hoping to stop the bill from being signed by the

Pride particulars
This weekend, in its usual Memorial Day weekend slot, comes D.C. Black Pride
celebrating its 21st year.
The local event, which founder Earl Fowlkes used as a springboard to launch the
International Federation of Black Prides, has a slightly different schedule this year
but is still focused on building a stronger black LGBT community in Washington.
Events kicked off Thursday and run through Monday. The Blade is a sponsor.
The Hamilton Crowne Plaza Hotel (24th and K streets, N.W.) is the official host
hotel for out-of-town visitors.
Tonight from 7 to 10 p.m., an opening reception and awards ceremony will be
held. Admission is free. The Welmore Cook Community Service awards will be
given to out local activists Ron Collins and Khadijah Tribble.
Workshops will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. A film festival will
be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the Sphinx Club Grand Ballroom. Admission is $20.
A “poetry slam” will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. also in the ballroom hosted by
“Buttaflysoul.” Cash prizes will be awarded. Contestants must sign up in advance.
At 10 p.m., a retro dance will be held at the hotel. Admission is $15.
On Sunday, a church service will be held, again at the hotel. It’s free.
Unlike years past, the main festival with booths and entertainment will be
held on Memorial Day (Monday) at Fort Dupont Park. The event will be held in
conjunction with Us Helping Us, a local AIDS charity that specializes in the black
LGBT community.
Visit dcblackpride.org for more information.
