Wednesday marked the first day of demolition for an Old Town building famous for a nightclub where the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam played shows.
The front face of the 1908 building at
121 N.W. 6th Ave. that had housed Satyricon, the
nightclub, and the West Hotel came crashing down Wednesday afternoon
in a step toward the construction of a seven-story building of
affordable apartments owned by the Macdonald Center, a social service
organization.
As a backhoe tugged at the remnants of the building, across the street, passers-by and people waiting at the MAX station watched with cameras poised.
Larry Weston, an employee of Howard S. Wright, the
project's general contractor, said the building is expected to be
completely demolished by Friday and construction on the new building
is slated to be done by July 2012.
