Suspected gunman dead after shooting 2 Michigan State Police troopers

UNION CITY, MI - The man police believe is responsible for shooting two Michigan State Police troopers Wednesday morning is dead.

First Lt. Dale Hinz, of the MSP, said early Wednesday afternoon that he did not yet know whether either of the troopers fired a shot during the 11:15 a.m. incident in which they were wounded.

He said the suspected gunman was found deceased outside of a residence in Union Township, a few miles south of Union City shortly after 2:15 p.m. on Jan. 24.

The two officers were shot as they visited a residence in a rural farming area of northern Branch County to collect information on a "cold case" investigation.

Troopers said a man at the residence with a long gun fired on the troopers, wounding a detective sergeant in the chest and grazing the hand of a patrol officer.

At 2:30 p.m., the sergeant was undergoing surgery at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, a police spokesman said. His condition was not immediately known.

Hinz, who was collecting information on the incident and troopers' response to it, said he also could not say what caused the death of the suspected gunman.

His name, age and other information about him were not immediately released.

In a press release, police said the troopers announced their presence before they entered the residence where the shooting took place. But they allege the suspect aimed a long gun at the officers.

Police said the officers were attempting to take cover when the detective sergeant was shot in the chest and the other trooper was wounded.

Police have Arbogast Road blocked off near Sid Road, as well as adjacent streets just south of Union City.
