International Enemy No. 1 (Wanted, May 1948)
Mort Leav was born in New York City. In 1936 he produced editorial illustrations for South American newspapers through the Editors Press Service in New York City. He broke into comic books in 1941 when he joined the Jerry Iger shop. Among his features were 'Jungleman' for Champ Comics by Harvey Comics, and 'ZX-5, Spies in Action' for Jumbo Comics by Fiction House. He later drew 'Doll Man', 'Sally O'Neil, Policewoman', 'Hell Diver' and 'Uncle Sam' for Quality and 'The Hangman' for MLJ while still with Iger. In 1942 he designed the aviator 'Skywolf' and the swamp monster 'The Heap' for Air Fighters Comics by Hillman Periodicals, and at the same time he began working for Busy Arnold's Quality Group on 'Blackhawk', and 'Kid Eternity'.
Action Unlimited (1950)
Mort Leav left in 1943 because he was drafted and he turned his attention to illustrating for army magazines. After the war, Leav drew some 'Captain America' stories for Timely before he became art director and chief artist at Orbit Publications in 1946. He drew almost all the cover and lead stories for books such as 'Wild Bill Pecos', 'Wanted', and 'Patches'. Leav left Orbit in 1954, and after two years as a freelance commercial artist, he joined an advertising agency. His final comic book work was 'The Amazing Adventures of Buster Crabbe' for Lev Gleason and some contributions to Ziff-Davis romance comics in 1954. As an advertising artist, he drew some of the first storyboards for TV commercials, including ones for Procter & Gamble.
