Third Symphony of Gustav Mahler

Like Mahler's music, the ballet was not created according to a Libretto. The music itself is its theme. The following is therefore not a literal synopsis. These word-images are John Neumeier's spontaneous answers to the question of meaning in his ballet—written long after its creation. More...

49th Hamburg Ballet Days

Every year they are the highlight of the season: the Hamburg Ballet Days. The 49th edition of the two-week festival will open on 30 June 2024 with "Epilogue", John Neumeier's last world premiere for the Hamburg Ballet to date. In addition, the ballet days offer insights into the repertoire of the season, including John Neumeier's recently revived ballet "Odyssey". Other highlights include the two-day guest performance by a guest company. On July 9 and 10, 2024, the Birmingham Royal Ballet presents the first real heavy metal ballet experience with "Black Sabbath - The Ballet" and the glamorous "Nijinsky Gala XLIX", John Neumeier bids farewell after 51 years as artistic director of the Hamburg Ballet. Epilogue

The world premiere of "Epilogue" on June 30 marks the end of John Neumeier's 51-year tenure as artistic director and chief choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet. John Neumeier has created an intimate, chamber music-like work with piano and singing on stage. The production shines with the participation of international guest artists: the renowned French Schubert interpreter David Fray, the celebrated Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian will perform Richard Strauss' "Four Last Songs". For the costumes, John Neumeier has enlisted Swiss designer Albert Kriemler. More...

Birmingham Royal Ballet – "Black Sabbath – The Ballet"

A ballet experience of a different kind: Birmingham Royal Ballet will be making a guest appearance at the 49th Hamburg Ballet Festival on July 9 and 10, 2024 with the German premiere of "Black Sabbath - The Ballet". The audience can expect an exciting synthesis of two seemingly incompatible forms of artistic expression, classical ballet and heavy metal music by the band from the hometown of Birmingham Royal Ballet. On Tour to the Nervi Festival

To mark the glittering conclusion of John Neumeier's 51-year era as Chief Choreographer and Director of the Hamburg Ballet, the company will make a guest appearance at the international Nervi Music Ballet Festival 2024 on July 19 and 20. On the initiative of Genoese First Soloist Jacopo Bellussi, designated Artistic Director of the Nervi Ballet Festival from 2025, the Hamburg Ballet will present John Neumeier's adaptation of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in the open-air theatre in the enchanting setting of the Nervi Parks. The Nervi Music Ballet Festival continues the great tradition of the historic Nervi Ballet Festival founded by Mario Porcile in 1954, which was one of the most important festivals on the European dance scene until the early 2000s. It's off to Venice!

In January 2025, the Hamburg Ballet will perform abroad for the first time under the direction of Demis Volpi. For five performances of "Romeo and Juliet", the dancers will be guests at the renowned Teatro La Fenice and dance John Neumeier's first full-length ballet to the music of Sergei Prokofiev for the first time in Venice. The guest performance continues the long friendship that connects the Hamburg Ballet and the world-famous theatre in the heart of the lagoon city: the Hamburg Ballet made its first guest appearance at La Fenice in 1975 and has been there five more times since then, most recently in 2023 with John Neumeier's ballet "Lady of the Camellias".
