McLaughlin-Jordan family papers, 1841-1915 (bulk 1841-1863)

The collection consists of the family papers of the McLauglin and Jordon families of Marion County, Indinana, 1841-1915. Gilmore Jordan was an officer in the Army of Virginia, 3rd Infantry Regiment. John A. McLaughlin served in the 47th Indiana Volunteers. Henry B. McLaughlin enlisted in the 35th Alabama Infantry and was imprisoned at Johnson's Island, Ohio, in 1863-64. Henry's sister, Susan McLaughlin Brown, appealed to Indiana Governor Oliver P. Morton to have her brother released. The collection includes a letter of introduction from Morton to President Lincoln regarding Susan Brown, and an authorization from Lincoln to administer the oath to Henry B. McLaughlin. Other correspondence includes a letter from Henry at Johnson's Island, and John McLaughlin's description of the Seige of Vicksburg
