Herrold, Jonathan, 1840-1862 1862 Papers
Letters home and a diary that were copied by Herrold's widow into a journal. They cover the period from when he joined the 9th Indiana Infantry in Indianapolis to just before his death at the Battle of Stone's River. He travels from Indianapolis to Nashville to Murfreesboro. He describes the country through which he travels with some detail telling of the trees and farm buildings. He was close to the battle of Perryville and describes the reception by the people of Danville when his unit entered the town. His unit chased the fleeing rebels out of Kentucky and back to Nashville and Stone's River. He describes a huge foraging expedition by his unit across the Stone's River
