Optical switching and n2 measurements in CS2

WE Williams, MJ Soileau, EW Van Stryland - Optics communications, 1984 - Elsevier
Optical switching of picosecond pulses in CS 2 has been observed to occur at the second
critical power for self-focusing. This has been confirmed in an independent direct
measurement of the nonlinear refractive index at 1.06 μm and 0.53 μm. The measurement
technique involves observations of far field spatial distortions of gaussian beams after
passing through a nonlinear material.

Inhibition of fermentation and growth in batch cultures of the yeast Brettanomyces intermedius upon a shift from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (Custers effect)

MR Wijsman, JP van Dijken, BHA van Kleeff… - Antonie Van …, 1984 - Springer
Aerobic growth of the yeast Brettanomyces intermedius CBS 1943 in batch culture on a
medium containing glucose and yeast extract proceeded via a characteristic pattern. In the
first phase of growth glucose was fermented to nearly equal amounts of ethanol and acetic
acid. After glucose depletion, growth continued while the ethanol produced in the first phase
was almost quantitatively converted to acetic acid. Finally, after a long lag phase, growth
resumed with concomitant consumption of acetic acid. When the culture was made …

Plant antiviral agents; VI. 1 3-Methoxyflavones as potent inhibitors of viral-induced block of cell synthesis

L Van Hoof, DAV Berghe, GM Hatfield… - Planta …, 1984 - thieme-connect.com
An investigation of the constituents responsible for the pronounced antiviral activity
observed for extracts of Euphorbia grantii Oliv. stems has afforded four related 3-
methoxyflavones exhibiting remarkable activities against picornaviruses and vesicular
stomatitis virus. All compounds were found to be derivatives of 3-methylquercetin. The
concentration of 3-methylquercetin (3-MQ) and 3, 3′-dimethyl-quercetin (3, 3′-DMQ)
inhibiting 90% of polio type 1 and coxsackie B4 viruses in tissue culture was about 0.01 …

Infection of eucaryotic cells by helper-independent recombinant adenoviruses: early region 1 is not obligatory for integration of viral DNA

K Van Doren, D Hanahan, Y Gluzman - Journal of virology, 1984 - Am Soc Microbiol
Recombinant viral genomes carrying a selectable drug resistance marker have been
constructed by insertion of a hybrid gene for neomycin resistance into the helper-
independent adenovirus vector, delta E1/X. The hybrid gene consists of sequences coding
for the aminoglycoside 3'-phosphotransferase II from Tn5, under the control of the simian
virus 40 early promoter, and renders mammalian cells resistant to the neomycin analog, G-
418. Most of adenovirus early region 1 is deleted from delta E1/X (nucleotides 455 to 3330) …

Mast cell activation and vascular alterations in immediate hypersensitivity-like reactions induced by a T cell-derived antigen-binding factor.

SK Kops, H Van Loveren, RW Rosenstein… - … ; a Journal of …, 1984 - europepmc.org
Previous studies have shown that T cell-dependent activation of mast cells to release
serotonin is required for the elicitation of delayed-type hypersensitivity in mice. We have
recently described an antigen-binding T cell factor that is a suitable candidate for
participation in the mechanism by which T cells activate mast cells in delayed-type
hypersensitivity. The T cell factor transfers the ability to elicit an antigen-specific immediate
hypersensitivity-like ear-swelling reaction following local challenge with antigen. In the …

Cholesteryl ester transfer activity: localization and role in distribution of cholesteryl ester among lipoproteins in man

JEM Groener, AJ Van Rozen, DW Erkelens - Atherosclerosis, 1984 - Elsevier
The cholesteryl ester exchange/transfer protein is involved in the transport of cholesteryl
ester from high density lipoproteins (HDL) to very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and low
density lipoproteins (LDL). Localization of cholesteryl ester transfer activity (CETA) in plasma
was studied by measuring CETA in various delipidated fractions from a single step density
ultracentrifugation gradient of plasma. CETA was measured in an in vitro system by
calculating the exchange of cholesteryl ester in a standard mixture of [3 H] CE-HDL and …
