Announcements

Open "Office Hour" Call
We received a few requests for a dedicated time to answer questions about web archiving. So, we’re happy to announce our first “Office Hour” call. This is not a required part of the program, so if you can’t make it or are not interested that's okay. If this first call is successful, we will continue to schedule them on a regular basis.

Please join us on Wednesday, May 30, 11am PT/2pm ET for an open call when we can answer questions and revisit any topics you'd like clarification on. This will be an informal call with no specific agenda, just an open "Office Hour" to discuss what's on your mind with web archiving, Community Webs, or Archive-It. You can join us via Zoom on May 30 by pointing your web browser to: https://zoom.us/j/5214918601

Share your Community Webs story on the Archive-It blog
Cohort member Diana Bowers-Smith from Brooklyn Public Library wrote a lovely guest post on the Archive-It blog about saving local news website. As your collections and web archiving experiences grow, we’d love to have more guest contributors from the Community Webs program! Contact Maria if you’re interested.

Important Dates

Archive-It Advanced Training: Describing Web Archives
The next webinar in the Archive-It Advanced Training series will be Tuesday, May 22 at 11am PT/2pm ET and will be a partner driven discussion on describing web archives with metadata. You can register to attend this webinar here, and can view all previously held Advanced Training webinars here.

Archive-It 2018 Partner Meeting
The Archive-It web archiving community will gather for a half-day meeting on Tuesday, August 14, preceding ARCHIVES*RECORDS 2018, the annual meeting of the Society of American Archivists (SAA) in Washington, DC. There is no cost to attend, so if you plan to go to the SAA annual meeting in DC this year, save the date and plan to join us Tuesday afternoon.

Community Webs 2018 Cohort Meeting
Our final in-person cohort meeting will be Friday, November 2, in Columbus, Ohio at the Columbus Metropolitan Library Northside Branch. Logistic information is now available in the online course space for you to reference as you start making your travel plans.

Action Items

  • Please be thinking about how to use up the remainder of your Archive-It data budget and stipends for the year (for the IMLS cohort).

  • If you haven't already, please email Maria a quick description of what you’ve done so far as part of the Community Webs program. You can share anything about your library’s collecting goals, strategies, and partnerships for your web archiving program. Many thanks to those who have already done this!

  • If you still have collections in your Archive-It account that are private, please make them public. A requirement of this grant is that all the wonderful work you’re doing to build community web archives be open and viewable by the public.

Archive-It Quick Tips: Brozzler

Having trouble capturing dynamic content, and sites like Instagram or those built with Wix? Running a test crawl using Brozzler can be a good next step in your troubleshooting process. Brozzler is our newest beta crawling technology, built at the Internet Archive. You can read more about how it differs from our standard crawling technology here, and more on when and how to use it here. Currently, Brozzler is not available by default in your Archive it account, so you will need to submit a request to have it enabled in a support ticket, if it isn’t already.
