This week marks a milestone for the OSCE. On March 25th, the Organization’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights mobilised its largest ever election observation mission for the Presidential Elections in Ukraine. The observers’ first assessment is available to you here, along with information to help you understand the background to the OSCE’s engagement in Ukraine.

This week’s breaking news of the death of an Italian photojournalist and his assistant has highlighted the dangers faced by media in conflict zones. Conditions for journalists in Ukraine are ‘rapidly deteriorating’, according to an extensive report by Dunja Mijatovic, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, which you can read in full here.

With Ukraine filling the headlines, the OSCE is taking a deeper look at the role of regional organisations with the latest of our Security Days. This one-day event at our Vienna headquarters will focus on the power of regional organisations to stop conflicts. The poll in Ukraine was characterized by high turnout and a clear resolve by the authorities to hold what was a genuine election largely in line with international commitments and that respected fundamental freedoms, despite the hostile security environment in two eastern regions, international observers said.
