Top 20 Countries: Citations in Five-Year Increments
Special Country Feature, January 2012
Last month ScienceWatch.com presented its annual "Top 20" listings of countries (across all 22 fields), which as of the latest bimonthly update of Essential Science IndicatorsSM, achieved particular distinction based on their papers published in Clarivate-indexed journals from January 2001 through August 31, 2011, a 10-year plus 8-month period (fourth bimonthly).
This month, ScienceWatch.com Webmaster Spyder Schafer presents additional data for the latest annual selection of “Top 20” countries. In this analyses, the graphs below show each country’s citations in overlapping five-year increments since 2001. The countries are listed in the same order—again, according to total citations—as they were last month.

How to read this data
The Y axis scale indicates the number of citations received by the papers in the period. The X axis is broken down into seven overlapping five-year periods from left to right. Each five-year period is self-contained; that is, only citations within a time period to articles within that time period are counted. Note that the current year contains year-to-date data with the data being updated every two to four months.
For example, the period 1997 - 2001 counts papers in the database for each full year (1997 through 2001) and cumulates citations to these papers from all citing items from 1997 through 2001. Thus, each successive time period is defined by a similar five-year time window to form the series.
