Jessica Ennis to miss Commonwealth Games in Delhi

Britain's world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis has told the BBC she will skip the Commonwealth Games in October.

Ennis, 24, said the Games in Delhi clashed with her winter training programme and she would aim to peak for the European Championships in July.

"I sat down with my coach and we decided the Commonwealth Games isn't a good option this year," she said.

Sheffield-based Ennis captained the British team at the Aviva International Match in Glasgow on 30 January.

Ennis, who was crowned World Champion in Berlin in August 2009, won bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne four years ago.

But the British skipper, who also has one eye on preparations for the World Indoor Championships in South Korea in March 2011, said the timing of the upcoming Games in Delhi did not fit in well with her plans.

She added: "October is a difficult time to peak - in July for the Europeans and then again in October - and October is when I begin my winter training so we sat down and decided the main focus is the Europeans this year."

Ennis made an impressive start to the indoor season with a 60m hurdles victory over American world champion Lolo Jones in Glasgow.

Ennis is aiming for European glory

The world heptathlon champion cruised through in the final stretch to claim a British record time of 7.95 seconds, two hundredths of a second ahead of Jones.

After setting personal bests in all of the five pentathlon disciplines in Scotland, she will be favourite for more glory in Doha at the world indoor championships on 12-14 March.

More than 8,000 athletes from 71 nations are expected to attend the Commonwealth Games, which have been the subject of security fears following terror attacks in the region.

In August, fears of a terrorist threat saw England's badminton team withdraw from the World Championships in Hyderabad, although the competition passed without incident.
