“Eataly per Duomo:” Eataly Showcases the Duomo di Milano to Support Expo Milano 2015 Mayor of Milan Giuliano Pisapia, President of Veneranda Fabbrica Duomo di Milano Angelo Caloia and Owner of Eataly Oscar Farinetti joined together in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the exhibition, “Eataly per Duomo.” The exhibit is free and will be open to the public until May 2015. Italian Art Critic Philippe Daverio shared with i-Italy, “The Duomo of Milan has the highest concentration of sculptures worldwide because, since the beginning of its construction in the fourteenth century, regularly the sculptures have been changed when they get old… The whole system together makes a history of sculpture over seven centuries.” Eataly is sponsoring the exhibit to represent the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano and to support the Expo Milano 2015 being held in Milan next year, whose theme is “Feeding the Planet: Energy for Life.” Oscar Farinetti, owner of Eataly, tells i-italy exactly why Eataly is supporting this event. “Eataly was created with the purpose of becoming a storytelling place to narrate the prime Italian beauty: food. But Eataly also has the obligation and the responsibility to tell the story of all other amazing Italian attractions: the art, the history, the landscapes,” Farinetti explains. “That’s why we decided to create this room in New York – to bring the Duomo here.” It is clear that Italian culture is predominantly influenced by Italian food. “Food is culture, culture is food. Some people say that culture doesn’t put food on your table, but culture nurtures us,” Giuliano Pisapia, Mayor of Milan, explains at the opening of the exhibit. The focus on food in Italian culture is primarily due to geography. Farinetti explains this so beautifully when he says, “We are the only peninsula in the world that is shaped like this: long and narrow, surrounded by a kind sea. Do you know where the answer is? It’s in the winds. The propitious winds of our seas meet the breezes of our mountains and hills to create an unmatched microclimate. We are the world’s champions of biodiversity. Let me give you a couple of numbers as an example. We have 1228 native vine varieties, France has 220; 533 varieties of olives in Italy, 70 in Spain; 140 different cultivar of durum wheat in Italy, 6 in the US. We are the country with the highest biodiversity and this needs to be known. This is what Eataly works for.” Food connects Eataly to Milan. As Pisapia puts it, “Milano is a ‘water-city,’ an agricultural city. Very few people know that it is the second agricultural city in Italy. So food is a pillar of this city and for me.” Over six million tickets have already been sold for the Expo Milano 2015. The goal of the exhibit, and the work of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano, is to restore the Duomo to its original quality by May 1, 2015. The Event Manager for the Expo explains, “We need to attract people because we are building extraordinarily in our city, so the more people coming, the more nice things we can offer to the worldwide population.” Pisapia looks forward to the success of the exhibit at Eataly and, eventually, the Expo Milano 2015: “Values are the main item in the agenda of my administrative and political commitment for this city. Of course, the more foreign visitors for the Expo and for Milan, the more we will be energized. There will be six months of debate, discussions, international conferences, but, above all, happiness, joy and fun. This is the mixture that can make Milano truly attractive and clearly initiate a dialogue with all of those cities that have the same goals.” “Eataly per Duomo” is a celebration of Italian culture, but specifically, a celebration of the city of Milan. The beautiful statues spanning seven centuries give only a taste of the majesty that is the Duomo in Milan. It is the hope of Eataly, Giuliano Pisapia and others involved in producing the Expo Milano 2015 that this exhibit will inspire visitors to travel to Milan for the unveiling of the newly restored Duomo di Milano in 2015.

The Advantages of Bilingualism / How to create an Italian DLP in local PS in NYC. Meeting at the Consulate with IACE to promote dual language classes in public schools. Creating Together an Italian Dual Language Program in your Local Public School . The Italian Consulate General in New York, in collaboration with IACE (Italian - American Committee on Education), La Scuola d' Italia "G. Marconi" and many other institutions, is committed to promote and spread the knowledge of the Italian language with various initiatives not only within the Italo-American community, but also in American public schools. In this context, the Consulate General has decided to undertake a new initiative aimed at creating English - Italian bilingual sections in the public schools of New York under the "DUAL PROGRAM" activated by the City for this reason, and has decided to organize an informational meeting with experts on bilingualism and Mr. Fabice Jaumont, the head of the Education Department at the French Embassy, which has already started this journey in the most important schools in New York. The plan is to be able to understand the benefits of bilingualism, but above all the bureaucratic and organizational path to activate in order to achieve the creation of bilingual classes in public schools, beginning with kindergarten, together. The success of this initiative requires the involvement and interest of the Italian and Italian- American community, without which it would be very difficult to undertake this new and important step. Once the projectis finished, the families of Italian origin, can continue to maintain their cultural and linguistic roots in the framework of the American educational system, which would then be offering their children an extra chance. As seen on i-ItalyTV. The opening of the second (the first was opened in Chicago last December) Nutella Store in the US. Where? At Eataly, the most famous Italian gourmet store in the heart of Manhattan. Famous pastry chef Katia Delogu prepared croissants, crepes, cookies, sweet sandwiches, muffins and other delicious recipes all with Nutella for the Bar's opening day. Dino Borri, top manager of Eataly, welcomed all the guests who were attending the awaited event. It's a great pride for Ferrero to bring one of their best product to the US," said Bernard Kreilmann, President of Ferrero USA. "It was in the US for several years but only 4 years ago we decided to expand very rapidly and now we are in this location in New York where we have a real Nutella Bar so this is a fantastic experience." Present at the Nutella event was also the celebrity chef and Eataly partner Lidia Bastianich. Nutella represents for me my childhood, my growing up," said Lidia recalling eating Nutella in her childhood. "It represents the flavor of Italy and specifically of Piemonte: milk chocolate and hazelnuts, doesn't get any better. It's a mouth full of Italy!" Also her son and international restaurateur, winemaker and judge of the famous TV show Master Chef Joe Bastianich, couldn't miss the big opening. Actually he couldn't stay away from the Nutella counter. "Nutella is the bounty and the goodness. Nutella is why Italians make everything better. It truly represents the simplicity and perfect food that goes with everything," said Bastianich who fell in love with Nutella when he was was just a kid. It was love at first sight, he told us. "I thought: this is what I need to have in my life."

Interview by Letizia Airos with Maestro of Italian design Gaetano Pesce into his atelier-studio in Soho. The conversation touches upon the work that has earned him international renown, and the fine line between art, architecture, and design. "Error is a big part of being human. Men and women are meant to be different from machines, not to be perfect. Error, and misdeed, and imperfection. People are wrong to try to do things perfectly. They say that error is vile and evil, but I don't see it that way. What's evil is repeating one's errors." On the subject of the transition from old to new, Pesce talked about his project at the MAXXI Museum in Rome. The exhibit—a major retrospective that will run form June 20 to October 26 and represents an important step towards ecognizing his work in Italy—is called "Il tempo della diversità" (The Time of Diversity).

Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò was founded with the specific intent of spreading Italian culture outside of its national boundaries, with the belief that Italian culture belongs not only to the Italians but to whomever has the desire to get to know more about it. The principle that shapes the work of this institution finds adequate expression in the words of Erasmus of Rotterdam, "All we who are learned are Italians." From concerts to art exhibits, from academic lectures to conversations with writers, directors, actors, and singers, from film screenings to theatrical performances, the Casa's calendar is studded with treats for people of all generations and backgrounds. From the outset, the Casa has promoted Italian culture in the broadest sense of the term. Its decision to focus on contemporary Italy is prompted by the desire to present New Yorkers with a country that is not an outdoor museum but rather a modern, complex place that remains pivotal to the international scene, whatever its shortcomings.
